Shopping for four wheelers for kids? Here’s a guide to help.

So it’s your first time shopping for a four wheeler for your child. You probably have a few (or a lot) of questions, and that’s completely understandable. Here at S&H Farm Supply, we want you to have a pleasant experience browsing ATVs for sale, so here is a quick guide to buying four wheelers for kids.

Where To Start?

You’ve done your diligent research and have determined that a four wheeler is the best beginning choice for your kid. Because of its greater sense of stability, you can feel peace of mind knowing that your child’s beginning off road adventures will be fun, yet safe.

Determine Your Use and Needs

Are you planning for recreational use? If so, go with a four-wheeler. Off-roading has become an increasingly popular family sport. ATV manufacturers have recognized this and there are many good options when it comes to buying four wheelers for kids.

If your kid will be helping you around the ranch or farm, then a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) will be the best choice. The UTV engine is built more for towing and pushing than for speed and trail running. It is also a good choice for hunting or camping. It can be a great way for your kid to learn how to ride and maneuver the machine without the risks associated with higher speeds.

As a general rule, age and experience will also affect your decision when purchasing four wheelers for kids. The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is a great resource for getting recommendations on what size engine your child should start with, depending on their age and size. In general, a 70 cc engine is a maximum size for ages 6-11, and a 70 cc to 90 cc is appropriate for ages 12 to 15.

New or Used?

You might want to commit with a smaller investment by buying a used four wheeler, so the inevitable bumps and scratches aren’t such a big deal.

If you are purchasing new, remember that similar to cars, the ATV/four wheeler has customizable options that can also bump up the cost. You might want to wait until your kid is fully invested in riding before you commit to the extra bells and whistles.
